Poor Knights

The Poor Knights Islands are the home of eight species of Petrels, one is the diving petrel (kuaka)(Pelecanoides urinatrix), the strikingly patterned Buller's Shearwater(Puffinus bulleri) considered a rare bird elsewhere but is prolific on the Poor Knights.  In the thickly regene rating forest cover,  live Kakariki(Cyanoramphus novae zealandae), Bellbirds(Anthornis melanura melanura), Spotless Crakes(Porzana tabuensis plumbea) as well as five species of skinks and two geckos.  Little Blue Penguins(Eudyptula minor) nest on the floor.  But the star inhabitant of the Islands is the shy and durable Tuatara . It has survived the dinosaurs having been around for 60 million years.
