WE regret to learn that Mrs Mercer, who
was injured by fire about thirteen weeks ago,
died in the Hospital yesterday. She rallied
from her injuries considerably at one time,
and it was hoped that her life would be
saved. Unhappily she relapsed, and after
much suffering she died of weakness.

MR A. ROSANOWSKI.
There passed away in Palmerston North, late yesterday afternoon, a very highly esteemed citizen, Mr August Rosanowski, who had lived at this centre practically continuously for 56 years. During his long period of residence he had made a host of friends, and his death has caused much regret. The late Mr Rosanowski was in every sense a pioneer, having witnessed the transformation of Palmerston North from a village to a city. He was 85 years of age.
With his wife, the deceased gentleman, who was born in Danzig, arrived in New Zealand in 1874, in response to an appeal made by the British Government for colonists for New Zealand. He arrived on July 17 of that year, and it is a coincidence that his death should have occurred on July 17, 58 years later. Mr and Mrs Rosanowski landed in the South Island at Jackson's Bay, and after two years on the West Coast, came to Palmerston North. Here the deceased gentleman worked for the sawmilling firm of Richter, Nannestad, Jensen and Company for 17 years, during that time helping in the levelling of the bush on the northern side of the town, around where the Hospital now stands and further out to Kelvin Grove. In those days, from Featherston Street to Boundary Road was a swamp. After the bush in this district had been cut out, the firm which employed Mr Rosanowski transferred its horses and material to Tahoraite, and there deceased worked for a couple of years. He then took up farming at Stoney Creek, and returned to Palmerston North six years later, to live in retirement.
Though he had never participated in public affairs, the late Mr Rosanowski had led a very useful life as a private citizen. He was one of the earliest members of Court Manawatu Lodge. Until some two years ago he had never suffered a day's illness. Last December he suffered a stroke, however, and was removed to the hospital, and had since been an inmate.
The late Mr Rosanowski, who was predeceased by his wife 12 years ago, also by a son and his only daughter, is survived by three sons, Messrs August Rosanowski (Kawakawa), Joseph Rosanowski (Auckland) and Michael Rosanowski (Palmerston North). There are 25 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. The deepest sympathy has been extended to the bereaved family. The interment will take place at the Palmerston North cemetery on Wednesday afternoon.

MR H. T. SIM.
Mr Herbert Thomas Sim, whose death at the age of 57 years occurred recently, was one of Feilding's most highly respected citizens and a man of fine character. He was born at Johnsonville and was employed by the Wellington Meat Export Co., Ngahauranga, for 20 years, afterwards being transferred to their Kakariki works. Later he accepted the position of foreman butcher with the Feilding Farmers' Freezing Co., now conducted by Messrs Thos. Borthwick and Sons, Ltd., with whom he remained up to the time of his death.
He was a keen sportsman in his younger days, and played for the Poneke, Johnsonville, and Feilding Football Clubs. He won many trophies, and in later years took an interest in the Feilding Boxing Club.
The funeral took place from the residence, Aorangi, to the Feilding Cemetery. Workers from Messrs Borthwick and Sons formed a guard of honour on the main road outside the works entrance while the cortege moved between the ranks. The services at the Anglican Church and the graveside were conducted by Ven. Archdeacon Petrie. The pallbearers at the residence and the cemetery were Messrs V. J. Stichbury, J. Garnett, G. I. Mutch, S. A. Jarrett, C. Williamson, C. H. Fry, and H. Brown, while at the church Messrs M. L. Sim, K. G. Sim, Sergt. L. T. Sim, L. D. Sim (sons), L/Cpl. E. Pearce (son-in-law), and Sergt.-Major J. T. Bell performed this office.
Besides Mr Sim's wife there are left to mourn their loss four sons, Messrs Malcolm, Kenneth and Lance, of Feilding, and Sergt. L. Sim, of Waiouru; also three daughters, Mesdames G. L. Wood (Stratford), Eric Pearce (Upper Hutt) and Miss Freda Sim (Feilding).
